Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index is a number calculated from a person's weight and height. BMI has shown to be a reliable indicator of body fatness for most children and teens. It does not measure body fat directly, but correlates to direct measures of body fat. Additionally, it is an inexpensive and easy-to-perform method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
According to recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), BMI is used as a screening tool for overweight in children beginning at 2 years of age. It is used to screen for overweight, at risk of overweight, or underweight.
Make sure you get BMI readings done for you and your family to determine that obesity is a problem and possibly affecting your health.
